This is a take-home exam, open book and open note. But group discussion is prohibited. You need to answer FIVE QUESTIONS in the following question set.

  1. Some planning models and economic models may look similar to each other. However, they have different data requirement. Describe the difference between planning data and economic data. Also explain how those data can fit the needs of planning and economic models.

  1. Describe similarity and difference among Census Summary File (SF) 1, 2, 3, and 4. Explain: What kinds of planning issues is SF 1 more appropriate for? And what kinds of planning issues is SF3 more appropriate for? Provide some examples to support your explanation.

  1. (1) Draw a graph to show the relationship between transportation cost and the distance from CBD in a household location model. (2) Use this household location theory to explain how urban form will be changed if current gas prices stay high for a long time. (3) What will happen on urban form if income keeps increasing for a long time?

  1. What is Monocentric urban form and what is polycentric urban form? Draw a graph to show the relationship between distance and density and answer two additional questions: How to identify urban subcenters? How to validate these centers?

  1. For a given land use type, Von Thünen’s land use model initially uses a straight line to represent the linear relationship between the profit of a market and the distance from the market. The standard model or Monocentric model uses an exponential curve to describe the relationship between land price and the distance from Central Business District (CBD). Describe Von Thünen’s land use model and explain how to develop the exponential curve for land price and distance based on Von Thünen’s model. (Note: You can refer to the tomato and potato example discussed in class )

  1. What is gravity model? How have urban planners used it in land use and transportation planning practice? Describe the model and provide an example to demonstrate the usage of the model.

  1. If you are going to study housing affordability in Harris County, what kinds of data or information you may need? Which may be available at federal, state, and local planning agencies? Use Census Bureau as an example, describe data characteristics and demonstrate the procedures of data collection, data manipulation, and data presentation.
