Book Review:
Students will be assigned to read The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures  Your task in

completing the book review will not be to just critique the book or the characters in the book, but to apply appropriate sociological concepts from the course in

providing your review.  In other words, you will be reading as a sociologist who is trying to find support for or against some of the theories and concepts covered in

the course. “Excellent” reviews comprehended the main themes of the book, were able to use proper sociological terminology and concepts in addressing the themes, and

use academically acceptable prose and cited sources where appropriate.   “Good” reviews will have the same qualities as “Excellent” reviews, but they may be lacking in

one area.  “Acceptable” reviews will be lacking in more than one area, but must be coherent and applicable to the requirements of the assignment.  In other words, they

will show at least a reasonable attempt to complete the assignment in a proper fashion. “Poor” answers will display complete incomprehension of the themes of the book

and sociological concepts.  Incoherent and poorly written review in which I am not able to understand what you have written throughout the review will also be

considered “poor” in quality.  Book reviews should be at least three pages long and should be no longer than five. (( Citations are a must for all papers. Failing to

cite constitutes plagiarism ))
