Analyse working situations, develop and apply strategies which ensure effective management of international codes of practice and legislation. 1 http://www.uclan.ac.uk/aqasu/academic_regulations.phpAssignment Brief Assume that you are a management systems consultant, working for a small consultancy practice and your company has been contracted to advise on implementation of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified quality and environmental management systems for your client. Client profile A&A Ltd. is a haulage and plant hire provider for the UK construction industry. The company has a fleet of 60 haulage vehicles, which it operates from its depot in Preston, covering the whole of the UK. In addition, it has 10 small dumpers and 15 mini excavators for hire. The main client base for the plant hire business is in the North West of England. The company offer a delivery and collection service to clients’ construction sites for this equipment. The company employs approximately 150 staff and runs several other company vehicles including small vans and company cars. There is a team of five Regional Managers covering Scotland, the North of England, the Midlands, South West England/Wales and South East England. The company offers haulage services with a diverse fleet including flatbed trailers, tipper trucks, curtainsiders, bulk tipping tanks suitable for sand and powders and steel body tippers for moving scrap metal or heavy stone. A&A Ltd. have a team of qualified vehicle technicians who repair and maintain their own vehicles in workshop accommodation at the main depot. This service is also offered to other vehicle fleet operators. The company’s accommodation is as follows: x The site is located on a small business park in a residential area, adjacent to the river Darwen. x Office accommodation in a 1960s industrial building. x There is an area on site for vehicle washing, with a pressure washer and large scale vehicle wash, similar to that shown in figure 1. x Skips are provided to the rear of the building for waste disposal. x There is a large workshop on the same site for vehicle repair and maintenance x The building’s electricity requirements are provided by the national grid and gas by Transco. Part A – for submission by 23:59 on Friday 27th March 1. Advise the company on the implementation of an appropriate Total Quality Management (TQM) approach (20 marks). 2. Provide an analysis and recommendation of the main quality improvement tools that the company may use to improve quality (10 marks). 3. Advise the company on the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard and application of these within the company as an appropriate quality management system (QMS) (20 marks). Part B – for submission by 23:59 on Friday 8th May 4. Considering the range of activities undertaken by the client, provide an analysis of what you expect their significant environmental aspects may be, including detail on how and where these aspects come about and the nature of their effects on the local and global environment (20 marks). 5. Based on these significant aspects, define some suitable objectives, targets and environmental management programmes that would be relevant to the client (15 marks). 6. Discuss how compliance with legislation and regulations can be managed within an ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System (EMS) (5 marks). 7. Explain what is meant by independent 3rd party certification to the ISO 14001 standard and how organisations can become certified (10 marks). Total Marks: 100 This assignment contributes to 100% of the module assessment. To pass this module, a student must achieve a minimum of 50% for this assessment. Assignment Format The assignment is to be produced in A4 printed format (Word Document) and the total word count of parts A and B combined should not exceed 5,000 words (excluding titles, reference list, appendices and executive summary). Please state any assumptions you have made. The assignment should be submitted on Blackboard by the deadline shown. References should be provided for all sources used following the Harvard referencing style. You must ensure that you keep another copy of what you submit. Your submitted original will not be returned to you until after the end of year Assessment Board. When you submit your work, please note that it must be submitted via Turnitin only. You must not, under any circumstances, hand it directly to your tutor or another member of staff. Feedback – The module tutor/assessor will normally provide you with generic feedback on any formative or summative aspects of the assessment within 15 working days of the date of submission. This may be either posted on a website, or sent to you electronically, or provided in a class-based session. Individual written feedback
– will be provided on a proforma feedback Assessed Work Submission sheet which will address the extent to which you have met the learning outcomes of the assignment and indicate the mark or grade attained in accordance with the original marking criteria shown on the assignment brief. It will also provide you with an indication of areas for improvement. Deadlines – It is essential that you assist your tutor by complying with submission deadlines so that you can benefit from the generic feedback process. Note that work offered for submission within 5 working days after the date/time specified without an authorised extension will obtain a maximum mark of 50% for that element of assessment. Work submitted after 5 working days of the date/time specified will be awarded grade 0. The Head of Department or nominee is authorised to give permission for one extension period of between 1 and 10 working days. (See Academic Regulation G3) Extenuating circumstances – If you are prevented from submitting work for reasons which could not be disclosed prior to the required submission date/time eg. illness or accident you must use the ‘Extenuating Circumstances’ procedure so that your claim may be dealt with prior to the end of year Assessment Board. Details of the procedure can be found in your Student Handbook and the Students Guide to the Regulations. Pass grades – in order to pass the module you need to pass each main element of the module with a minimum mark of 50%. If you fail the module and subsequently obtain the required 50% mark after reassessment then the maximum mark for each reassessed element is 50%. Plagiarism – Plagiarism is regarded by the University as a very serious offence. Please ensure that you read the relevant academic regulations (G7) concerning what constitutes plagiarism and ensure that what you submit as an individual or as a group is clearly all your own work and that the source of any information or material is fully identified and properly acknowledged/referenced.
